Halo 5's Covenant is believable, though, and that's the difference from milking it, per se. As it is now I wonder, what comes after Infinite? Who are the new bad guys going to be and how are they going to be even more dangerous than the bad guys today?Įdit: 343 please make a BioWare-style Halo game about the post-war galactic order It really feels like the Halo universe would have benefitted from a little bit of genre pivot for games set after the HCW, while maybe milking the HCW itself for a bit more badass space rockstar action. So in the following games, we've instead been given new baddies who represent even bigger galaxy-sized threats (Didact/Cortana and friends), or baddies who are somewhat rehashed versions of the old baddies ('Mdama and Atriox). Halo games, as they're written now, need humanity and/or the entire galaxy to constantly be in grave danger, with enemies so dangerous and numerous that Chief gets to be the badass hero who saves everyone. now everyone begins the long and painful process of peace, right? With lots of tensions and competing interests but generally no desire for continued war? Maybe even forming some kind of extra-species joint intergovernmental body a la UN so that the different species can figure out what the post-war galactic order is going to look like?īut unless you want to write an old-school BioWare game, that doesn't make for a good setting. The sense I got at the end of H3 was, well, the war is over, the Covenant is in shambles, the humans have evaded extinction by the skin of their teeth, so. The Reclaimer trilogy has always felt kind of directionless to me by comparison. There never was an in-game explanation until Halo 5 a little bit.Īll that needed was for them to not be called "the Covenant" as thematically the title was associated with Truth's loyalists who would only be Brute-led factions. Thematically going from allied Elites who hate the Covenant, to enemy Elites calling themselves "the Covenant", is a stark clash that needed explanation in-game. But Halo 4 and Halo 5 never covered the actual lore reasons in the books the only presentation players experienced were that Elites suddenly hated humans for reasons unknown. Look, from a technical lore perspective, it makes sense. The "Covenant" in Halo 4 was explained away in lore through the books, but it's presentation was horrible thematically. Now if the scene showed him off duty in a relaxed setting with a light mood, maybe the story could butter us up for such a scene to work smoothly. It's canonically accurate that he has a catheter, but thematically such a scene doesn't flow with the story. The thing with themes vs lore is that you could have a thematically bad scene where Chief suddenly empties his suit's catheter to eject all his waste in the middle of battle. Halo 4 should have given Jul 'Mdama's faction it's own name and presented them hating the Brutes and Prophet's as well. They hated the Brutes and Prophets just as much if not more than the humans. This is about themes not technical lore, as technically in the lore it all works but wasn't explained at all in the games themselves.Īnd the thing with Joyous Exaltation is that they didn't believe in the Covenant.
